Super Mario Galaxy 2's gameplay is based on its predecessor with updated graphics and gravity effects. There are over MW3 perks and 240 Power Stars to collect using the brand new items and power-ups. The new items include, for example, drills that allow Mario to drill through planets and dirt, they can also be used to explore the interior of planets and uncover hidden treasures. One of the new interesting power-ups is the Rock Mushroom, which gives Mario the ability to turn himself into a boulder and smash through barriers.
Power-ups and other elements from the previous game will be making a return, including the Fire and Ice Flowers and the ability to become Bee Mario and Ghost Mario.
Instead of the hub world from the last game, for traveling between different galaxies, Super Mario Galaxy 2 will have a new simplified map system. This allows players to know where to go next and which places they should go back to, in order to get the remaining Power Stars.
The new world map presented in classic Mario style.
Skilled players can also collect "Comet Metals" that are hidden in the stages. These unlock harder levels with tougher challenges!
On some stages Mario can find a Yoshi egg and pair up with his dinosaur buddy Yoshi. When riding Yoshi, the player can aim and control his tongue using the Wii Remote. This can be used to pull levers, swing across gaps and grab items and shoot them back at enemies.
Yoshi can also consume various fruits, which give him different abilities. Blimp Fruits will inflate him like a balloon, which allows him and Mario to float to new heights. Dash Peppers on the other hand give a huge boost to his speed. Glimmer Bulb Berries allows Yoshi to light up rooms and reveal secret paths for a certain amount of time.
